On Thursday, December 4th members of the OCN Blizzard will be helping out in the kindergarten classroom of Miss LaRocque at Opasquia Elementry School. Players will be helping the kids get in the Christmas Spirit by assisting them in writing letters to Santa. The Players will also be handing out "Read To Succeed" tickets for the games. This will be the Team's 8th time visit a school in the community. Thanks to the University College of The North, the Team has been able to hand out over 200 tickets to kids in Joe A Ross, Opasquia Elementry and Kelsey School.
Blizzard Players Help Fight Cancer
Bald is beautiful. Just ask the players of the OCN Blizzard. Next Thursday (Oct. 30) at Murray Dunn GM in The Pas, players will lose their curly locks, participating in the Cut for Cancer event.
Meanwhile, fans can take part in the action financially. This weekend at Gordon Lathlin Memorial Arena, donations will be accepted as the Blizzard take on Winnipeg Saints in a back-to-back series.
“I'm very proud of our guys,“ Blizzard GM/head coach Doug Hedley says of the Cut for Cancer. “They decided to take the initiative to do something for cancer after seeing the response on hockey night in Canada. They approached our staff who in turn approached a major supporter and it took off from there."
As far as the future of Hedley's hair, the veteran coach remains non committal.
Local radio station CJ 1240 (Arctic Radion) will be promoting the event, with hopes that fans will dig into their wallets and assist in the fight against cancer.
Jeremy Wachal, Operations Manager at CJ 1240 says the unique event demonstrates the strong character of the Blizzard players, who are willing to sacrifice their hair in the battle against cancer.
Blizzard Player Appearance at IGA
Several Blizzard players will be at the local IGA in the Otinika mall on Friday the 24th between 4 and 6pm helping to hand out and sign pumpkins. Come meet some of your favourite players
Blizzard Player Appearance at St. Pauls
With the exception of a few players (high school students), the OCN Blizzard were able to put a few smiles on some very appreciative residents and St. Paul's Care Home. Cam Martin, a big fan of the team who is unable to attend the games live, listens to the action on CJ1240, was especially glad to see the boys. The team captains presented Cam with an Autographed Game Jersey. The OCN Blizzard would like to thank the staff at St. Paul's for their hospitality and the residence for their company during the visit.
