The OCN Blizzard hosted the Flin Flon Bombers in the first of a home and home series Thursday night. The Blizzard came up short in a feisty contest, falling to the Bombers by a score of 7-3.
The Blizzard were entering into their first preseason action of the season and came out of the gate slow. The first period seen the Bombers out shooting the Blizzard by a 20 to 5 margin as Blizzard goaltender Brandon Dillon turning away 17 of the 20 shots. The teams headed in to the first period intermission with a Bombers leading 3-0.
The rookie filled Blizzard line up showed some nervousness but settled down as the game progressed. Blizzard rookie Dawson Anderson was first to put the Blizzard on the score board in the second period with a great second effort sliding one past the Bomber goaltender, with assists going to rookie Matt Bullard and Rick Frechette. The Blizzard headed back into the dressing room at the end of two down by 3. Specials teams were working for the Bombers as the Blizzard attempted for fend off the power play but coming up short 3 times in the spirted game.
Third period seen a lot of the same end to end action as the Blizzard pulled within one of the Bombers with a couple of power play goals. OCN Blizzard veteran Bryce McInnis fired one passed the Bomber goalie early in the third, with assists going to Campbell and Potskin. The second power play marker of the game scored by newcomer Brady Valiquette, with assist going to Young and Makokis.
As the game progressed, the young Blizzard club continue to gain momentum and confidence but due to slow start in the contest, came up short. The game ended with Bombers outshooting the Blizzard 41 to 27 as goaltenders Brandon Dillon and Patrick Kasper split the duties. Coach Smith commented that he was pleased on how the team finished the game but preparation coming out of the gate will need to improve.
The OCN Blizzard travel to Flin Flon Saturday, September 12th for a 7:00 pm game with the Bombers as the Bombers finish up their pre-season. Next home action for the Blizzard will be the final home and home preseason match up as the Swan Valley Stampeders. The Stampeders will visit the GLMC on September 14th, with puck drop at 7:00 pm. The Blizzard will travel to Swan River to wrap up their preseason September 15th.
