Coach’s Perspective – What it takes to be an OCN Blizzard

The OCN Blizzard are looking forward to their upcoming Rookie and Main Camps which will be held September 3 to 6, 2015 at the GLMC.  The coaching staff will have their hands full as the depth coming into camp will be deep.  Competition for every spot will be heated.  The skill of both listed and free agent players is high as the team staff look to sign players with qualities that will benefit the 2015-16 roster and build the winning tradition the fans expect in years to come.

A positive attitude is a vital part to playing with the OCN Blizzard. Head coach/GM Jason Smith is looking for players who have a team player mentality.  “We are looking for a players who have great overall character”, highlighted head coach/GM Smith.  Passion to compete and improve your game are two important qualities that the scouting staff will be watching for.

A player’s character is easily seen on and off the ice as they interact with teammates and coaches as they deal with different situations. The right attitude will be “make or break” when looking to crack the OCN Blizzard line up.

Another must have quality for an OCN Blizzard player is to bring a relentless work ethic to the ice.  We are looking for players that are motivated to come to the rink every day and improve their game, said coach Smith.

Discipline goes hand in hand when talking about work ethic and not seeing discipline on and off the ice will be a huge factor when joining and staying with the hockey club.

As well, with any elite sport, fitness is a big component that adds to a player’s game in every aspect.  Strength and conditioning is an important part of being a high caliber hockey player.  Having The Pas Wellness Center’s Jomar Cruz as part of the team staff, this will play an integral part to success of our club.  Our team will provide the players the opportunity to receive high quality training.  Observing how dedicated our players are by putting in the time on and off the ice will be key to sticking with the hockey club.  Fitness is a commitment to the player and team.

Our reputation will be built around a team that is hardworking, high-skilled, and tough to play against.  We want our players to be extremely competitive and play with a relentless attitude,” said coach Smith. “This type of reputation will allow us to return to the years where our club won five league championships.”

The OCN Blizzard open their 20th MJHL regular season with on the road against the Swan Valley Stampeders on September 25th.  The home opener will be on October 6th against the Swan Valley Stampeders. Season tickets for all 30 home games are available at the Blizzard office in the GLMC, or by calling 204-627-7077.
