The OCN Bizzard continue to shake things up, making a number of key trades and acquisitions.
The Blizzard have acquired 1997-born defenseman Taylor Derynck from Alberni Valley (BCHL) in a trade for goaltender Brody Claeys.
Derynck, from Whistler, BC, is a smooth-skating player who will provide a solid 2-way game to the Blizzard defensive core. In 35 BCHL games, the 6’0, 175lb defenseman had 3G-5A-8PTS-38PIMS.
Before making the jump to the BCHL as a 17-year old, Derynck was a star defenseman for the Comox Valley Glacier Kings of the VIJHL.
The OCN Blizzard and the Selkirk Steelers have made two separate trades within the past week.
First, the Blizzard sent 18-year old Forward Brandon Bartley to the Steelers for 16-year old Defenseman Preston Phillips. Phillips, a ’99 born player from Winnipeg, is playing this season for the Interlake Lightning of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.
The second trade between the two clubs saw 19-year old forward Cole McCartan and Future Considerations sent to Selkirk, for 18-year old Defenseman/Forward Thomas Lenchyshyn.
Lenchyshyn, from Steinbach, MB, was a 1st round WHL draft choice, going 18th overall to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in 2012. After playing three seasons with the Eastman Selects Midget AAA program, he made the jump to the MJHL with the Steinbach Pistons as a 17-year old. Just prior to the trade deadline last season, Lenchyshyn was moved to Selkirk. Split between the two MJHL clubs, he played 41 games, scoring 3G-9A-12PTS-110PIMS. He also suited up for one game with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL.
This season, Lenchyshyn was with the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL. He stands at 6’1, 205lbs, and will bring size and strength to the Blizzard line-up.
The OCN Blizzard are proud to announce the signing of 1996-born Forward Mitchell Friesen.
Friesen, a 6’4, 200lb forward from Surrey, BC, will be a welcome addition to the Blizzard line-up bringing a combination of size and speed. Originally drafted in the 4th round of the WHL Bantam Draft, Friesen played 70 games with the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL over 2 seasons. In those 70 Western Hockey League games Friesen had 1 goal and 3 assists. He also spent time in the KIJHL and BCHL respectively.
As the 20th season continues, The Blizzard thank Cole, Brandon, and Brody for all their contributions on and off the ice, and wish them all continued success.
A big welcome to Taylor, Preston, Thomas and Mitch. We welcome you to our communities, and look forward to seeing you in Blizzard jerseys.
